The Community Board Process

So you’re looking to open a restaurant in New York City, and would like to serve some cocktails?  Sounds straightforward, right?  Welcome to the world of the New York City Community Board.  They exist in all five boroughs and help shape their local communities. ,As Wikipedia points out, Community Boards have an important advisory role in dealing with land use and zoning matters, identifying community needs as part of the City’s budget process, and working with government agencies to improve the local delivery of services. More broadly, all community boards are concerned with any other matter relating to the welfare of the district and its residents.  But many New Yorkers do not even know they have these representatives.  There are 59 boards throughout the City, each with up to 50 volunteer members, who are appointed by the Borough Presidents (including with recommendations from City Council members).
